Activists and survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster demonstrate during the 27th anniversary of the tragedy in Bhopal on December 2, 2011. India’s Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan last month urged the central government to consider boycotting the forthcoming 2012 London Olympics due to the game’s sponsorship by US firm Dow Chemical, linked to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. Government figures put the death toll from the accident at 3,500 within three days of the leak, but the state-run Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has since estimated the figure at between 8,000 and 10,000 in the same period, with victims groups say many are still suffering the effects today.
